MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSIONS

The following information is about the submission of proposals for publication. We encourage submission of hard copy proposals through regular mail rather than as e-mail attachments.

Please allow three to four weeks for a response and make sure to enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for this purpose. If you'd like any materials returned to you, please make sure the envelope is large enough to accommodate them. Of course, if you provide us with an e-mail address when you send in your proposal, we will be able to respond to you more quickly.

Finally, please be advised that we no longer publish fiction or poetry.

When submitting a proposal, please include the following information:

1. General description of the book's purpose, content, format, audience, length, and special features, including illustrations (projected number, black and white or color)--3-10 pages.
2. Table of contents or chapter outline, with short summaries of each chapter or section (about a page per chapter).
3. One or two sample chapters.
4. Market for the book: e.g., scholarly or professional organizations whose members would be most interested, potential for classroom use as required or recommended reading, competing books and how yours differs from them.
5. List of any sections of the book that are being published separately, e.g., as journal articles.
6. Timetable for completion.
7. List of possible expert readers, with names, titles, addresses, and phone numbers if possible, and note on their qualifications and previous association with you, if any.
8. Your qualifications for writing this book. Please enclose a vita.

Here's what authors have said about Rutgers University Press:

"The professionalism of the Rutgers book team has made them a joy to work with. While many—but not all—publishers of today treat authors as little more than vendors, we have been accorded thoughtfulness and respect. In a world where mediocrity, speed, and the "bottom line" have seemingly banished the striving for genuine quality, Rutgers University Press is like a breath of fresh air. Moreover, the end result of the team's efforts will make us look far better as writers than we really are."—Chris Maser, author of  Trees, Truffles, and Beasts (2008)
