"The book holds special appeal for lawyers, people interested in 20th-century New Jersey history and anyone curious about how a private citizen can affect public affairs. . . . In an era in which rock stars are role models and appearance sometimes is more important than reality, Alan V. Lowenstein recalls an earlier time when intelligence, integrity and dedication defined the American character."-The Star Ledger (Newark, NJ)

Alan V. Lowenstein: New Jersey Lawyer and Community Leader commemorates the life and achievements of one of New Jersey's most prominent citizens, attorney Alan V. Lowenstein. In this lively autobiography, Lowenstein provides readers with the inside story on what law practice was like before the rise of large, impersonal firms and the current emphasis on competitive practice.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1913, Lowenstein is the founder of one of New Jersey's most prominent law firms, Lowenstein Sandler PC. Continually active in public affairs, he played a key role in the Temporary National Economic Committee during the New Deal and steered the development of several New Jersey community institutions. In the 1950s and 1960s, he was involved in civic reform initiatives in Newark.

Highlights of Lowenstein's six decades of public and private service include:

" Revising the New Jersey corporate and banking laws and helping to establish the foundations of New Jersey's largest Jewish community federation,

" Leading the transition of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra from a semiprofessional suburban orchestra into a major institution of statewide significance, and

" Helping develop Liberty State Park and sponsoring the establishment of the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice.

As detailed in the book, this accomplished lawyer leaves a magnificent legacy of great significance for students of New Jersey's legal, political, religious, and cultural history.

A copublication with the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
