Description: A desk reference containing biographical-critical entries for over 600 British women writers from the Middle Ages through the present.

"Especially because of the light it sheds on lesser-known writers, [this] is a good addition to the literary reference shelf."-Reference Books Review review of the first edition

"A comprehensive work, it is not limited to the field of belles lettres, but includes authors of diaries, translators, social activists, historians, scientists, and ardent feminists such as Frances Wright. . . . this is an excellent work, thoroughly edited, with good bibliographical references, and a valuable addition to the field of women's studies. It should be on the reference shelf of every library."-Reference Quarterly review of the first edition

This broad examination of women writers identified with Great Britain builds on its predecessor's strengths, with fifty percent new material as well as completely updated entries. Over 600 writers are discussed in terms of their biographies, with precise details where these could be ascertained and in some cases correcting biographies in other reference works, as well as thematic issues and critical reception. Each entry includes a definitive bibliography of primary works and thorough secondary bibliographies (including book-length studies, reference works, major essays, and reviews) to lead readers to other sources. Available in paperback for the first time, this book is an ideal desk reference for scholar and student alike.
