Key Words in Jewish Studies
Series Editors:
Deborah Dash Moore, University of Michigan
Macdonald Moore, Vassar College
Andrew Bush, Vassar College
Scope of the Series:
Key Words in Jewish Studies is a series of introductory books that seeks to clarify critical
terms in a rapidly changing field. Each volume will provide clear and judiciously illustrated accounts of terms currently in use, chart histories of past usage and application, and offer adventurous perspectives in an engaging and accessible style. This series aims to open a new and exciting chapter in Jewish Studies for the 21st century.
Each book will be divided into three basic sections. The first section, Terms of Debate, defines the key words under discussion as they developed over the course of Jewish history, noting in particular the traditional terms from which they derive, and the changes in understanding of allied concepts. The second section, The State of the Question, provides an analysis of contemporary debates in the scholarly literature and, where appropriate, more popular venues (e.g. journalism, political speeches, film). The third section, In a New Key, explores the term's place in contemporary culture and the paths opened toward the future.
